How do I bring my partner to the UK?

If you are settled in the UK, a British or Irish citizen, or hold a UK visa, then you may be able to bring your partner to the UK.

How to bring your partner to the UK

If you are settled in the UK, a British or Irish citizen, or hold a UK visa, then you may be able to bring your partner to the UK. The specific visa options available will depend on your circumstances, such as your immigration status and how long your partner wishes to remain in the UK.

Visa options for bringing your partner to the UK

There are several visa options for individuals wishing to visit or join their partner who is already present and settled in the UK. The appropriate visa options depend on the duration your partner intends to stay in the UK. Some possible options include:

  1. Visit visa: The Visit visa is appropriate for those wishing to visit the UK for a short period of time (up to 6 months). Your partner must intend to return to their country of origin at the end of their visit.

Or, for longer periods of time in the UK:

  1. Fiance visa: The Fiance visa allows individuals who are engaged to a UK-based partner to enter the UK to marry their partner (also referred to as a ‘sponsor’) within six months of arriving in the UK.

  2. Spouse visa or the Unmarried Partner visa: This route is for individuals who are married, in a civil partnership, or in a long-term relationship to a UK-based partner to join them in the country.

It is important to note that of the options above, only the Spouse and Unmarried Partner visa is a route to permanent settlement in the UK.

Who can be considered as a partner?

To bring a partner to the UK, you don't necessarily need to be married. However, you must be able to demonstrate that your relationship is genuine and subsisting. This includes the following scenarios:

  • Being in a civil partnership or marriage recognised in the UK.

  • Having lived together in a relationship for at least 2 years when applying.

  • Being engaged or proposed civil partners, planning to marry or enter into a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of arrival.

Bringing your partner to the UK on a Visit visa

The UK Visit visa is a short-term visa that allows individuals, including partners, to visit the UK for various purposes. Not everyone is required to obtain a UK Visit visa for visits shorter than 6 months, so it is crucial to check whether a visa is necessary before travelling to the UK.

To be eligible for a Visitor visa, your partner must meet the following requirements:

  • Intend to visit the UK for a short-term visit, lasting less than six months.

  • Intend to leave the UK at the end of the visit.

  • Can financially support themselves and any dependents during the visit.

  • Can cover the cost of the return or onward journey, as well as any additional expenses related to the visit.

  • Will not attempt to live in the UK through frequent or successive visits.
