The Life in the UK Test

To apply for British Citizenship or settlement in the UK (e.g. Indefinite Leave to Remain), most individuals are required to pass the Life in the UK test. The Life in the UK test consists of 24 questions and aims to quiz individuals on the traditions, laws, and political system of the UK. To pass the Life in the UK test you must score at least 75% (the equivalent of getting 18 questions right).

You cannot apply for British Citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain until you have passed the test, and so, it is vital that you prepare for the test.

In addition to passing the Life in the UK test, to be able to apply to permanently settle in the UK or naturalise as a  British citizen must also prove that they meet the English language requirements. You can read more about sitting an English language test for UK visas here.

What happens at the Life in the UK test centre?

The Life in the UK test is a computer-based test where you will have 45 minutes to answer 24 multiple choice questions. The questions you will be asked will be on the general topics of British customs, traditions, law, and politics. You must score 18 or above to pass the test.

To be able to sit the test you must bring the same ID in which you used to book the test. In order to confirm your ID, your photo will be taken on the day. It is worth noting that you are not allowed to bring children and family members into the Life in the UK test centre with you, so please ensure that childcare is booked in advance.

You are not allowed to bring electronic devices, notes, or bags into the test room - most test centres will have facilities which you can use to securely store any items you bring with you.

When you enter the test room you will be guided to a computer which you will use to sit the test. Prior to starting you will be shown some practice test questions which you can answer, these practice test questions give you the opportunity to ‘get used’ to the format. Once you have completed the practice test, you will be told when the official test starts.

After the test, you will be informed of your results. If you pass then you will be given a unique reference number which will allow you to complete your Home Office immigration application. If you fail then you must wait at least a week before taking the test again.

Life in the UK test pass mark

The Life in the UK test pass mark is 75% - therefore, to pass the test you must get at least 18 questions correct. If you do not pass the test, you will not be able to proceed with your immigration application and will be required to take the test again until you do pass it.

What happens if you pass the test?

After you have sat the test you will be guided to a room where you can wait for your results. Once your results are ready you will be notified of whether or not you have passed.

If you have passed then you will receive a ‘unique reference number’ which you will need to use as part of your British citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain application. This number is then used by the Home Office to check that you have met the Life in the UK test requirement.

How can I check my Life in the UK Test result?

To check your Life in the UK Test result you can log in to the Life in the UK test website and click on the ‘results’ tab and your test result will be shown on the screen.

What happens if you fail the test?

If you do not pass the test then you will not be able to proceed with your British citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain application. Instead you will be required to retake the test and pass before you can finalise your application - there is no limit on the number of times you can resit the test, however, you must pay the £50 fee every time..

Please note that if you do not pass the test you must wait at least seven days before resitting.

Does the Life in the UK Test expire?

No, the Life in the UK Test does not expire. Therefore, once you pass the Life in the UK Test you won't be required to sit it again as the results can be used for any future immigration applications.
