The UK Immigration ID Check App: Guidance

As part of your immigration or UK visa application, you will be required to verify your identity. One way in which you can do this is through using the UK Immigration ID Check app (also known as the UKVCAS Identity Verification - IDV app). By using the mobile app, you will be able to confirm your identity remotely, and so, you will be able to save time and money by not having to attend a biometrics appointment.

Who can use the UK Immigration ID Check app?

Unfortunately the IDV app is not available to everyone who makes a UK immigration or visa application. Instead, to be eligible to use the app you must meet both of the following criteria:

  • Have made an immigration or visa application inside of the United Kingdom.

  • Have received an invite from the UKVI informing you to use the app to verify your identity.

In addition to the eligibility requirements, you must either have an iPhone or Android phone which meets the following criteria in order to successful download and use the app:

iPhone users Android users
  • You have an iPhone 7, 7 plus or newer.
  • Your phone is running on iOS 13.2 or later.
  • You have at least 120MB of storage space.
  • You can connect to either 3G, 4G or WiFi.
  • Your phone is running on 6.0 or above.
  • You have at least 135MB of storage.
  • You can connect to either 3G, 4G or WiFi.
  • Your phone has NFC so that the app can scan your documents.

To find out more about using the UKVI ID Check app to register biometrics, head over to the Home Office website.

What happens if I am not eligible to use the ID Check app?

If you are not eligible to use the IDV app, or if your phone doesn’t support the application then you will have to arrange and attend an in-person biometrics appointment and verify your identity that way.

How do I use the UK Immigration ID Check app?

To use the ID Check app you must have already started an immigration or visa application and have created an account within UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). If you are eligible to verify your identity through the app then when you come to the ‘Confirm your identity’ section on your immigration application a QR code will be displayed which, when scanned, will take you to the app download page. If you are completing your Home Office immigration application on your phone then you will not see this QR code and instead you will be automatically directed to the download page.

UK immigration: ID check - QR code

If you are completing your application online when you select the ‘Confirm your identity’ section on your application, you will see a QR code (a black and white square barcode) on the web page.

In order to scan the ‘UK immigration: ID check’ QR code you should do the following:

  • Open the application on your phone/tablet and select ‘QR code’ when prompted to select how you are connecting the app.

  • Hold your phone or tablet in front of the QR code, moving it closer or further away until the QR code is recognised.

If the ‘UK immigration ID check’ QR code doesn’t work or you are struggling to use it then you can use a connection code. To use a connection code, open the app and select ‘Connection code’ when prompted to select how you are connecting the UKVI ID Check app. You will then receive a connection code which you will need to enter on the web page of your application.

As part of the identity checks the app will need to scan your face - as part of the process the screen will flash whilst it is scanning your face. If the screen flashing will cause you difficulty then you can skip this step and instead you will be required to prove your identity another way. Children aged 10 or younger will not be required to complete this step.

When it comes to taking a photograph of yourself it is best practice to follow these steps:

  • Use a light, plain backdrop with even lighting.

  • Keep your head straight and look directly at the camera.

  • Have a neutral expression and make sure your eyes are open.

  • Include your head, shoulders, and upper body.

  • DON’T cover your face or eyes.

  • DON'T wear a head covering (unless it’s for medical or religious reasons).

  • DON’T have any shadows, objects or people behind you.

How to complete your application

When you have completed the steps above you will be required to complete the rest of the application - you can complete this application on any device (it does not have to be done on your phone).

After you have completed your visa application, you can delete the app. If your immigration application is successful then you will receive a digital immigration status which will allow you to travel to the UK.
