The UK government is moving towards a fully digital immigration system, replacing Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) with eVisas. Initially, the transition period was set to end on 31 March 2025, but the Home Office has now extended the grace period to 1 June 2025.

What This Means for You

If your BRP or EUSS BRC expired on or after 31 December 2024, but you still hold valid immigration status, you must ensure you can access your eVisa when traveling internationally, as an expired BRP alone is not sufficient for travel.

At Paragon Law, we advise individuals to carry a printed copy of their eVisa confirmation as a precaution, in case of any technical difficulties when accessing their status online. Having a backup document may help prevent disruptions when traveling.

From 2 June 2025, expired BRPs and EUSS BRCs will no longer be accepted as proof of immigration status for travel. Individuals will need to rely on their eVisa or alternative documentation to demonstrate their status.

What Is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a secure digital record of your UK immigration status. It replaces physical immigration documents, allowing you to:

Prove your status online when traveling, working, or renting property.

Easily update personal details via a government portal.

Avoid the risk of losing a physical document like a BRP or BRC.

How to Access Your eVisa

The Home Office has advised that migrants with valid UK immigration status should create a UKVI account to access and manage their eVisa. If you haven’t set up your account yet, we strongly recommend doing so as soon as possible.
