The UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa

What is the Adult Dependent Relative Visa?

The UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa allows parents of British Citizens and other eligible individuals to come to the UK to receive care. When applying for the Adult Dependent Relative Visa, applicants will be required to prove that the sponsor they wish to join in the UK is able to financially support and accommodate them, amongst other eligibility criteria.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for an Adult Dependent Relative Visa, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You are at least 18 years old;

  • Due to illness, disability or age you require long-term care to do everyday personal and household tasks; and

  • The care you need is not available or affordable in the country you live in.

In addition to these requirements, you must also prove that the relative you’re joining in the UK can accommodate and care for you for either:

  • The whole time your relative has permission to stay in the UK; or

  • 5 years, if your relative is a British citizen or settled in the UK.

The care requirement

To be eligible for an Adult Dependent Relative Visa, you must require long-term personal care as a result of age, illness or disability.

The care you require must not be accessible in the country where you live, even with the assistance of others, whether they are medically trained or not. This is a high threshold.

As part of the application process, you will be required to provide evidence that demonstrates the nature of the care you require, why it cannot be provided in your country of residence, and the impacts which this unavailability is having on you.

The application will also need to address why some/all of the following are unsuitable forms of care:

  • A close family member;

  • A wider family member;

  • Friend or neighbour;

  • Home-help;

  • Housekeeper;

  • Nurse,

  • Carer;

  •  Nursing/care homes.
