Paragon Law to speak at ILPA conference

Leading human rights lawyer and Head of the Paragon Law Detention and Deportation Team, Steve Bravery has been invited as a speaker to the Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA) at their annual conference in London on 21 November 2009.

ILPA have been very active in influencing government over immigration law and policy.  The organisation now has over 1,000 members including lawyers, advice workers and academics.

This year’s annual conference will be ILPA’s 25th anniversary and in order to mark this occasion ILPA’s co-founder, Lauri Fransmann QC of Garden Court Chambers and Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons, Dame Anne Owers CBE will also be presenting at the conference.

Steve has been at the forefront of shaping the law and policy related to the Home Office’s use of chartered planes to remove large groups of particular nationalities from the UK.  Alison Harvey from ILPA said “Steve was one of the first to alert his fellow practitioners to what was happening with charter flights and removal without notification.  He has been involved with all subsequent work on this matter and is extremely well placed to provide an overview of developments during the year at our annual conference”.

Steve said “It is an honour to be asked to speak at this event especially as it marks the 25th anniversary of such a hard-working and influential organisation”.

In respect of the current law on chartered flights Steve went on to say “whilst it is perfectly right to have a mechanism to remove individuals from the UK who have no claim to be here, the policy however of giving certain vulnerable groups no notice of removal and in other cases refusing to tell legal representatives of specific destinations or flight times can lead to injustice, unnecessary practical obstacles and an unnecessary waste in tax payers money in having to represent the best interests of clients who do have legitimate arguments that their rights will be breached if returned to their country of origin”.
